“Satellite View – Blue Fields” by Bob Dennison is a wonderfully composed abstract work that feels both architectural and organic, as though the viewer is hovering above a landscape that has been translated into memory, pattern, and emotion.
The title is especially fitting. The painting has the rhythm of a map seen from above: fields, pathways, waterways, boundaries and cultivated spaces all suggested through blocks of colour and strong blue dividing lines. Yet it avoids becoming literal. Instead, Dennison gives us a dreamlike aerial geography, a place made of fragments, impressions and quiet visual discoveries.
The dominant blue is the great strength of the piece. It acts as both structure and atmosphere. The deep outer blue frames the composition with a sense of night, depth and distance, while the brighter internal blues create movement across the surface. These lines feel like rivers, roads, borders or veins, holding the whole image together with confidence.
Against this blue framework, the soft greens, pale aquas and yellows bring warmth and light. The yellow sections are particularly effective, glowing like sunlit fields or illuminated patches of land. The touches of gold and silver add a richer symbolic quality, lifting the work beyond landscape and giving it a slightly sacred or treasured feeling, as though certain parts of the terrain hold memory, value or meaning.
There is also a pleasing tension between order and freedom. Many of the forms are rectangular and grid-like, suggesting planning, agriculture or human intervention. But the curved blue shapes running through the centre interrupt that order beautifully. They soften the geometry and introduce a more natural, flowing energy. This gives the painting a sense of life beneath the surface, as though the landscape is breathing.
Texturally, the work rewards close looking. The raised surfaces, especially in the yellow, gold and silver areas, create a tactile quality that makes the fields feel physical rather than flat. The viewer can almost imagine the roughness of terrain, the unevenness of earth, or the shimmer of light catching different parts of the land.
What makes “Satellite View – Blue Fields” so successful is its balance of simplicity and complexity. At first glance it is bright, decorative and immediately appealing. But the longer one looks, the more it reveals: routes, divisions, hidden shapes, quiet contrasts and a strong sense of place.

About the Artists
Robert (Bob) Dennison is a professional artist and a long-standing educator who serves as the Head of Art at Dauntsey’s School, a co-educational independent boarding and day school in Wiltshire.
Professional Training: Bob trained and developed his style at the prestigious Bath Academy of Art. His teachers is essentially a staggering list of the mid-20th-century British modernist movement, a period when British painters and sculptors were redefining abstraction, landscape, and form after the Second World War.
