Dreaming in Blue by Bob Dennison is a beautifully composed abstract work that feels both meditative and quietly radiant. The painting draws the viewer into a world of curved forms, layered colour and gentle movement, creating the sensation of a dream unfolding beneath deep water or within the architecture of thought itself.

The dominant blues give the piece its emotional atmosphere. From bright turquoise to rich indigo and near-black navy, Dennison uses blue not simply as a background colour, but as a living environment. It wraps around the central forms like a current, giving the painting a sense of depth, calm and mystery. The darker sweeping bands at the edges act almost like a frame or protective boundary, while the lighter blues open the composition and allow it to breathe.

At the heart of the image, the softer pastel shapes introduce warmth and tenderness. The peach, lavender, pale yellow and sea-green forms sit in delicate contrast to the surrounding blue, suggesting inner life, memory, hope or imagination. There is something almost floral in the arrangement, but also something celestial — as though the viewer is looking at petals, moons, vessels and pathways all at once.

One of the great strengths of the painting is its rhythm. The curves overlap and turn through one another with a strong sense of balance, yet nothing feels rigid or over-planned. The composition has a musical quality, with each form seeming to echo or answer another. The large sweeping teal shape through the centre is especially effective, giving the eye a clear route through the painting while also creating a sense of emergence.

The surface texture adds to the charm of the work. Though the image is abstract and clean in its use of shape, the visible hand of the artist remains present. The paint carries subtle movement and touch, preventing the piece from becoming too graphic or flat. This gives Dreaming in Blue a human warmth beneath its polished design.

As a title, Dreaming in Blue is perfectly judged. The painting does not describe a dream literally; instead, it captures the feeling of dreaming — fluid, layered, symbolic, emotionally charged and slightly beyond words. It is a confident and uplifting work, full of calm energy, inner light and graceful abstraction.

Bob Dennison has created a painting that invites stillness, reflection and repeated viewing.
