What immediately stands out is the confident geometry. Squares, rectangles and sharp triangular forms interlock across the surface like fragments of a futuristic city, a coded map, or signals passing through space. The title is especially well chosen: Telstar evokes satellites, transmission, distance and technological wonder, while Dream softens that precision, allowing the painting to feel imaginative rather than mechanical.
Dennison’s use of texture gives the piece real physical presence. Some areas are smooth and translucent, while others are rough, scratched, layered or almost frost-like. These distressed white passages are particularly effective, breaking up the blue structure with flashes of light, like static on a screen or stars scattered across a night sky. They prevent the composition from becoming too controlled and introduce a sense of movement, chance and discovery.
The palette is beautifully handled. Deep navy grounds the work, while turquoise, ice blue, cobalt and pale blue create rhythm and variation. Rather than feeling limited, the restricted colour range becomes one of the painting’s strengths. Robert (Bob) Dennison is a professional artist and a long-standing educator who serves as the Head of Art at Dauntsey’s School, a co-educational independent boarding and day school in Wiltshire.
Professional Training: Bob trained and developed his style at the prestigious Bath Academy of Art. His teachers is essentially a staggering list of the mid-20th-century British modernist movement, a period when British painters and sculptors were redefining abstraction, landscape, and form after the Second World War.
