The first strength of the work is its lighting. The amber glow of the lamp and candlelight gives the scene a deep emotional warmth, while the cool city skyline beyond the window creates a beautiful contrast between inner intimacy and the distant outside world. The room feels protective, almost confessional, as though this is the kind of space where truths are spoken slowly and honestly.
The central figure is painted with great sensitivity. His direct gaze is calm but searching, creating the feeling that the viewer has entered midway through a meaningful conversation. The relaxed pose, the glass in hand, and the shadowed expression all suggest reflection rather than performance. There is a stillness here, but not emptiness; the painting feels full of unsaid words.
Compositionally, the image works very well. The figure is placed slightly off-centre, allowing the window, candle, bottle and lamp to become part of the narrative. Each object adds to the mood without distracting from the subject. The blurred lights outside are especially effective, giving the piece a dreamlike urban softness and reinforcing the sense of late-night solitude.

About the Artists
Robert (Bob) Dennison is a professional artist and a long-standing educator who serves as the Head of Art at Dauntsey’s School, a co-educational independent boarding and day school in Wiltshire.
Professional Training: Bob trained and developed his style at the prestigious Bath Academy of Art. His teachers is essentially a staggering list of the mid-20th-century British modernist movement, a period when British painters and sculptors were redefining abstraction, landscape, and form after the Second World War.
Tony Nutley: A Photographer and Digital artist - Studied with his father, for the most part, self trained with a keen eye for detail and creating images that invite you to really look and reflect.
